They came, they saw, they cleaned up OXNARD, Calif. - This wasn’t your average weekend gardening and yardwork project, with a small army of 120 clad in green-and-white shirts descending upon the sprawling old Oxnard High School grounds Saturday to spruce up the place in hopes of a better future. They picked up trash. They removed graffiti and prepared rooms for painting. They hoed weeds and hosed down windows, walls and pavement. They wore gloves, dust masks and sun hats, and toted brooms, scoopers and garbage bags.
